The Ultimate Insult

My son, Matthew, has a very strange way of showing his displeasure. He smells you - long and loudly, with nostrils flared widely in your direction. This is accompanied by strong dislike painted on his mouth while his eyebrows glower menacingly. **SNIFFFFFF** If you have unluckily brought on this treatment, you know he has shown you his greatest contempt and the ultimate insult he can muster.

The other morning, he was angry with me and not holding back, including displays of yelling and throwing things at the ground. Suddenly all of this action halted, he turned his back to me, and over his shoulder he growled, "Fine. Then I'll smell you!" I knew what was coming. I intervened quickly, barely keeping a straight face. "If you smell me, you will go to your room for a LONG timeout." He thought about it for a minute and thought better of it and marched grumpily out of the room. I grinned as I thought of all the other terrible things he could do and was grateful that his insult of choice is so innocuous. Unfortunately, I doubt this one will last until his teenage years!

There's a threat you don't hear every day! That's funny.

I love little Elizabeth's hair, BTW.

If only that was the worst he could do. Cute!

Hilarious! Your description of Matthew tilting his head back to inhale, with nostrils flaring, made me laugh out loud. I can see how smelling someone could be quite an insult!

The other day the kids were wrestling on the bed with Matt after he came home from work. Micah declared, "I smell something stinky!"

"Hmmm, maybe Emmett needs a diaper change..." Matt suggested, lifting him up to check.

"No! It's not Emmett." Micah sniffed again, moving towards Matt. "It's you, Daddy!"

"Oh. Well, maybe it's the Cafe Rio food I had for lunch."

Micah leaned close and smelled Matthew's breath. "Yeah, it's your breff, Daddy!"

At least we know where we stand with kids, I suppose. And we know when we need to brush our teeth or gargle.

Audrey, your pictures are darling! And Elizabeth has so much hair--what a little beauty!

Your posts are so honest and real--thanks for letting us in on your insightful thoughts....

Hysterical, it is great you are noting all these things. I would be nervous to smell people as a threat, most likely that could hurt the smell-er more then the smell-ee. It is fun to see your beautiful family. thanks for visiting my blog!
